As laptop manufacturers opt for thinner designs, the number of available ports and slots has decreased drastically. If you are like me, you only have two USB-C ports on your laptop, and one of them is for charging. So getting a USB C hub is the only solution for expanding the available ports and slots. Fortunately, tons of decent USB Type-C hubs are on the market, but not all USB hubs are equally capable. So I have handpicked the best USB C hubs you can buy in 2022.

What to look for in a USB C hub

While buying a new USB C hub, you should keep a few things in mind. First, if your laptop uses a USB Type-C port for charging, you need to make sure that the USB C hub supports power passthrough. Also, you have to ensure that it can pass enough power to the laptop for charging. This will allow you to use a single USB C port for charging and connecting the hub. Without power passthrough support, two of your laptop’s USB Type-C ports will remain busy.

Secondly, if you plan to connect one or more monitors using the USB C hub, check if the hub’s built-in HDMI ports support at least 60Hz output for the resolution of your monitor. 4K @ 60Hz support is typically excellent as it will make your hub future-proof. In addition, having at least 60Hz ensure that you get a smooth experience while using the monitor, and the operation doesn’t seem laggy.

Most of us use USB drives for data transfer, and many of them still come with USB Type-A ports. So it’s a good idea to buy a USB Type-C Hub that supports at least USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps) data transfer speeds. The hub with just USB 2.0 data transfer speeds is just too slow in this day and age.

Lastly, you can also check for the presence of Ethernet and SD card ports if you need them.

Best USB C Hub for most people: Anker 555 USB-C Hub

The Anker 555 USB-C Hub is the best option for most people. It comes with all the standard ports and supports 4K video delivery via an HDMI port at 60Hz. Additionally, there is power passthrough support for up to 85W. You will have to use a 100W power adapter to get the 85W power pass through. If you use a lower-powered wall adapter, the hub will keep 15W for its operations and pass the rest on, which may or may not be enough for effectively charging the laptop. So make sure to use a sufficiently powerful wall charger.

Available ports: One HDMI port, two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports, one USB Type C for power, one USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type C for data (no video support), one Ethernet port, one SD card slot, and one microSD card slot.

Compatible with: MacBooks, Chromebooks, and Windows laptops

Best USB C Hub for port expansion: StarTech.com USB Type-C Hub (HB31C2A2CB)

Not everyone needs an HDMI or Ethernet port, and if you are just looking to extend the number of available USB Type-C and USB Type-A ports, the StarTech.com Hub is a great option. It comes with two USB-C ports and two USB-A ports. In addition, all four ports are rated for USB 3.2 Gen 2 SuperSpeed 10Gbps, so you’ll get great data transfer speeds.

Unfortunately, you won’t be able to use the USB Type-C ports to connect a monitor or Type-A port to charge other devices. All four ports are best suited for connecting external drives and peripherals.

Best Budget USB C Hub (Without power passthrough): Ugreen USB-C Hub 6-in-1

If you don’t need power passthrough as your laptop charges via a proprietary port, or you are fine connecting the laptop charger directly to a USB C port, this Ugreen USB-C Hub is a good option. It costs around $20 and comes with a decent selection of ports. However, it can only deliver 4K video at 30Hz, which is expected given its price tag. If you need 4K video at 60Hz, you are better off with my main pick—the Anker 555 USB-C Hub.

Having personally used Ugreen USB-C Hubs, I am confident that this USB-C Hub will not disappoint you.

Available ports: One HDMI port, Three USB Type-A USB 3.2 Gen 1 5Gbps ports, one SD card slot, and one microSD card slot.
